ADV Rider Brauhausbier's Highlights from 2 Tours to AK

I’ve done two trips to Alaska (2001 solo and 2007) and here are my “not to miss” list of the trip to AK.

Hyder Alaska – this is party central down in these parts. Try to spend a night there and hit the bars, wet t-shirt contests, etc, and get your “Hyderized” Card.  I’ve been Hyderized once and will never forget.

Cassiar Highway – a must do for anyone on a motorcycle.  I like to stop at the Tatogga Lake Lodge.  Very nice folks and helped me get warm on my cold and wet ride back home in 2001.

Ross lake loop – there is a road available from Watson lake (I think highway 4) that goes north to Ross River and connects to the main highway that goes to Dawson city- 300 miles of almost wilderness and superb.  I did this solo on my 2001 trip.

Top of the world highway.  Be sure to get to the border with AK by 9pm.  The border up here closes early.

Prudhoe Bay – one of the best rides on the planet and one of the most incredible places I’ve ever been. The Arctic is amazing! If the weather is good, go for it! It’s a four day trip up and back from Fairbanks to Prudhoe bay.

Manley Hot Springs – just about 150 North West of Fairbanks, they have cool indoor hot spring tubs, a bar and hotel (with camping in the front yard) , and a really nice and small Alaska rural town.  Was here in 2001 and was a highlight of my trip.

Wasilla – the Scharzenhoff (detailed in the Alaska beer guide).  Awesome

  Anchorage – Humpy’s Ale House – a must visit

Kenai Peninsula – We camped on the Homer Spit.  Shop and eat at the boardwalk on the Homer Spit.  Take the boat the  Danny J from the docks to the community of Halibut Cove for lunch or dinner at the Saltry restaurant there.  One of the most incredible restaurants I’ve ever been to (pics on the DVD).

McCarthy – An incredible place to ride and experience the Wrangel St Elias Range.  Check out the Kennecott Mill up the glacial canyon road from McCarthy.

Valdez- the weather was crappy and I was ready to go home so I didn’t go to Valdez, but this should be an incredible ride.
